A LexisNexis survey of UK lawyers finds that whilst four-fifths now use AI for legal research, only 30% have it embedded in their team's strategy and operations — creating a consistency gap that leaves productivity gains trapped with individuals rather than compounding across the organisation.

Key Insight:

The survey's Four-Layer Trust Stack — infrastructure, technical, workflow, and human trust — gives you a practical diagnostic framework. If AI use in your team varies significantly by individual, you likely have a gap at the workflow or human trust layer. Map which layer is weakest and commission a short internal audit by end of June. The gap between "lawyers using AI" and "AI embedded in our processes" is where governance risk lives.

EU AI Act Omnibus: Deadlines Extended, New Prohibitions Added

The EU Council and Parliament reached provisional agreement on 7 May to streamline the AI Act, extending the compliance deadline for high-risk AI systems from August 2026 to December 2027 and raising the SME threshold to organisations with up to 750 employees and €150 million in turnover.

Key Insight:

The 16-month extension for high-risk AI systems offers breathing room — but August 2026 transparency obligations (AI-generated content marking) remain on schedule. If your organisation uses AI in employment decisions, contracting, or compliance workflows, use this window to document your AI inventory now. Do not treat the deadline extension as permission to delay governance work; regulators will expect evidence of active progress.

In-House Counsel Must Rethink Their AI Playbook Before Regulators Do It for Them

As formalised AI policies shift from best practice to compliance obligation — driven by the EU AI Act, Colorado's AI Act taking effect in June 2026, and proliferating court disclosure orders — in-house counsel are under pressure to move from ad hoc AI use to documented, systematic governance frameworks.

Key Insight:

Courts are already sanctioning lawyers for AI hallucinations, and the accountability sits with counsel regardless of which department procured the tool. Your AI governance playbook needs three things before year end: a register of approved tools, a documented review protocol for AI-assisted outputs, and clarity on which workflows require human sign-off before AI output is relied upon. You are an AI governance adviser supporting in-house legal counsel at a UK-based organisation. I want to conduct a structured audit of our current AI risk posture. Please work through the following questions with me and, once I have answered each one, produce a one-page AI Governance Summary I can share with my General Counsel. Questions to cover: 1. AI Inventory: What AI tools are currently in use across our legal and compliance functions? (List any you are aware of, including general-purpose tools such as ChatGPT or Claude, and legal-specific platforms.) 2.
